Marc Márquez celebrates 7th victory – and cuts the gap in the title fight to just 6 points

Suter MMXI rider Marc Márquez celebrated his seventh victory of the season at his home race in Aragón, cutting the once-vast gap to world championship leader Stefan Bradl down to just six points.

But the 18-year-old Spaniard had top put up a tough fight before he was able to show his supremacy and pull away from his fiercely battling opponents. Scott Redding, Andrea Iannone, Simone Corsi, Alex de Angelis and Bradl himself tried whatever they could in order to stop the reigning 125 cc world champion and to keep the race open.

By mid-race, Márquez mounted his first attack and took the lead, but ran off the track in a fast corner and dropped back into the pack. With seven laps to go, he finally broke free of his opponents and pulled away in convincing fashion. Whereas Stefan Bradl struggled with vibrations caused by his rear wheel turning on the rim and dropped back to eighth position, Márquez crossed the line 2.488 seconds ahead of fellow Suter rider Andrea Iannone in second place.

Andrea Iannone (29), Simone Corsi (3), Stefan Bradl (65) & Scott Redding (45) put up a tough fight trying to stop Marc Márquez

“It was a difficult race. There was a strong wind and it took me a long time to find back to my usual confidence”, said the race winner. “I wanted my rivals to take the lead first, so they would have signs of wear and tear with their tyres and their energy before me. Iannone tried everything to brake my rhythm, but I knew that I had another few tenths of a second under my sleeve and that I was able to pull away once I was in front. And that’s exactly the way it turned out!”

Scott Redding was set for the podium when bad luck with a shredded rear tyre slowed him down.

Whereas Márquez, who is now the new title favourite, and Iannone celebrated on the podium, Scott Redding shook his head in disappointment when he returned to his Team Marc VDS garage. At the beginning of the race, the young Briton had also looked like a sure candidate for a podium finish. But after lap seven, he started to drop back dramatically. When he crossed the finish line in 15th place, his tyre was shredded to a point where big chunks of rubber were missing.

Luthi rode a strong race

Despite Redding’s bad luck, the Grand Prix of Aragón ended with another great team result for Suter Racing Technology. With double victory of Márquez and Iannone, Thomas Lüthi in seventh, Dominique Aegerter in ninth and Mika Kallio in tenth position, five Suter MMXI riders ended up in the top ten.

“Marc’s mental strength and riding skills are unbelievable. He plays cat and mouse with his rivals despite the obvious dangers of riding in such a fiercely battling group of riders, and when he has enough of the game, he simply sweeps into the lead and pulls away immediately”, said Eskil Suter, CEO of Suter Racing Technology. “His performance was once again fantastic and this race was a significant step in our title campaign. Stefan Bradl’s point advantage is all but gone and the championship is wide open again. We can go into the last races with confidence. All we need to do is to keep our current performance level until the end of the season.”

“At the same time, I am sorry for Bradl who was slowed by such an unlucky tyre problem. This was as unexpected as in the case of Scott Redding who’s rear tyre was shredded to bits. He also could have battled for a podium position.”

Julian Simon

“Iannone rode a strong race and achieved the maximum possible from his tenth position on the grid. So did Dominique Aegerter, who was unlucky in practice and started from 23rd place. His top ten finish and Tom Lüthi’s seventh place are remarkable!”
