Jerez: Second place in Spain - Tomizawa and Suter extend their World Championship lead

With a hard-fought second place at the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix, Japanese Shoya Tomizawa and manufacturer Suter extended their lead in the new Moto2 category.
After a spectacular crash on lap two of the race involving nine riders, the race had to be red-flagged and was re-started with a delay of half an hour. Tomizawa and Italian Simone Corsi had crashed first, and Tomizawa’s bike had lost engine oil as a result. Cold-blooded and completely unaffected by the incident, Tomizawa pushed for the top positions once again after the re-start, and lost the race to local hero Toni Elias only by two tenths of a second.

Shoya Tomizawa in front of Tom Lüthi
“Initially I thought we didn’t have one of the absolute elite riders like Toni Elias or Alex de Angelis. But it now looks as if Shoya Tomizawa fills this gap easily. In these two races, he has proven himself to be unbelievably strong. He also has very strong nerves – I am impressed how he fought again straight after the crash”, said Suter CEO Eskil Suter.

Roberto Rolfo (44) on Suter-MMX
“It’s no surprise that a Spaniard wanted to win this race at any cost, congratulations to him. It’s also very nice for Switzerland that Tom Luethi was riding within the top positions and scored his first podium in this class. It was fun to watch – it’s just great racing! The only flaw was the incident on lap two. Tomizawa fought back against Simone Corsi, got caught up with him and crashed. The generator cover was left with a leak, and engine oil came out. We have to live with such things in four-stroke racing, and luckily it doesn’t happen too often. It was a pity that the race was shortened from 26 to 17 laps after that, but it was still very exciting!”
