Tomizawa sixth in breathtaking battle. Jules Cluzel crashes

Suter MMX rider Shoya Tomizawa defended his second place in the Moto2 World Championship with a strong sixth place in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix. In an epic and breathtaking battle of five riders, who changed positions countless times in their quest for second place, Tomizawa looked set for another podium finish with one lap to go, but missed out in a frantic final by just fractions of a second.

French Suter MMX rider Jules Cluzel also seemed like a firm podium contender when he set the pace early on in this group. Cluzel gave it all in third and second position but then suffered another race crash, the second one after his fall at his home GP in Le Mans two weeks ago.

The chasing group: Jules Cluzel (16) / Alex Debon (6) / Gabor Talmacsi (2)
Toni Elias (24) / Tom Lüthi (12) / Shoya Tomizawa (48) / Sergio Gardea (40)

Reigning 125 cc World Champion Julian Simon tried everything to get ahead of the second pursuing group and to catch up with the front runners, but just didn’t have the right set-up and had to settle for ninth position in the end.

“It could have been a much better day for us. Tomizawa was second with one lap to go, and if he had managed to bring this result home, it would have been sensational”, said Eskil Suter, CEO of Suter Racing Technology. “In the end, he didn’t have the little bit of luck that you need in these slipstream battles. But still, he kept his second position in the championship, and the title fight continues to be wide open. It was of course disappointing to see Jules Cluzel crash again. Maybe he took too many risks, but maybe we also have to improve our chassis and make sure the riders have even more feeling for the bike when they push to the absolute limit. We have to analyze our data and see what we can do. The same goes for the bike of Julian Simon: He struggled with chattering in practice, and we have to figure out why he didn’t have enough speed in the race!”
